Nuclear Free New Zealand

Letters submitted to the Dominion Post Editor, Wellington, New Zealand, on an article published on 24 January 2015 on the Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock shift to 11:57 PM on 22 January 2015. Numbered for ease of reference. None published as at 28 February 2015.

Dear Bernadette

"On Sunday 22 March 2015, Nuclear weapons became obsolete and a global, UN monitored abolition arrived. The Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock was put at 10:57 PM." That's my wish for a Dominion Post headline on the Monday afterwards.
We should think positively, like this towards the Atomic Scientist's, symbolic, fixed clock warning, to every person on the planet. (B3, 24/1/2015, Dominion Post)

Yours  sincerely

Year of the sheep wisdom:- Sheep hate being separated from the mob in a paddock. They panic and race around in traumatized fear. When back with the mob, they blend as if it never happened. Do we stand alone with confidence that nuclear weapons must always be labelled evil and wrong from every angle? Do we triumph over lonely ridicule when promoting the Doomsday Clock's chilling message? (Dominion Post, B3, 24/1/2015) Do we stand undaunted for the Clock's reason from identified global crisis factors? Are we prepared to challenge those who prefer superstition to science, whether it be religious based or urban legendary? When will the Doomsday Clock be New Zealand's most popular tourist souvenir? In 2015? The Red Cross ICAN campaign can do it.

Yours  sincerely

Was the Doomsday Clock's, 22 January, two minute shift towards midnight, as 11:57 PM, a sleep stopper for many New Zealander's? (Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3) Certainly not, it seems. It was even a tonic to some, like Victoria Falls' swimmers' Devil's Pool, at the top rocky edge.* Armageddon expecting, Holy Bible Revelations believers, rejoice in the Clock's proof of nearness of the "end times", after which "paradise on earth" is expected later. The glass floored Sky Tower area gives a similar thrill. Nuclear weapons submarine crews alarmingly practice nuclear war firing sequences to a certain pre-launch level, without knowing if it's the real thing. The difference from the pool is that, whereas, it's unlikely to collapse, nuclear weapons' criminal  deployment is subject to human error. Calamity is possible. Planet earth's continued ability to sustain us is in doubt. "Wake-up" time is here. The Red Cross globally are, via their ICAN efforts.

Dear Bernadette

Who'd expect to be told classified details of our military services, in answer to specific inquiries? This shouldn't be so, regarding nuclear weapons details questions, from ordinary folk worldwide. As such, we're the planned recipients of massive nuclear weapons, which target cities and not patches of remote ocean. This is why New Zealand must have a Ministry of Disarmament to fully explain the imminent global nuclear weapons threat and why they must be immediately banned as the International Red Cross demands, via its ICAN campaign. Yet New Zealand's official response to the Doomsday Clock is deplorable. (Dominion Post, B3, 24/1/2015) For instance, the Levin Public Library, Te Takare, refused to display such a well presented clock that I'd prepared for them on 25/2/2015.

Dear Bernadette

We might one day turn on the TV news, heaven forbid, and hear that Moscow was hit and flattened that afternoon with a 100 kiloton nuclear weapon, accidently fired from a USA Trident submarine. However, as soon as it was launched, by mistake, the US President phoned Moscow on the "Hot Line" to explain. By monumental good fortune, Moscow agreed not to retaliate and so saved the world from the embedded Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) regime. There would obviously be a colossal aftermath, to sort out legal and humanitarian matters. As shocked as that would leave everyone, the Atomic Scientists Association, who set the Doomsday Clock, would have to say, "Do you believe us now?" It's 22/1/2015 move to 11:57 PM was from just this risk. (Dominion Post, B3, 24/1/2015) Japan says nuclear weapons and human beings can never co-exist. Their total abolition is long overdue.

I demand that world leaders ban nuclear weapons now. "Pigs fly!" deafens me. Yet they certainly must, say the experts.
".... the potential for an accidental, unauthorized, or inadvertent nuclear exchange between the United States and Russia remains, with both countries anachronistically maintaining more than 800 warheads on high alert, ready to launch within tens of minutes." (Atomic Scientists Bulletin)* Unsurprisingly, their poll of readers on the Doomsday Clock's new 11:57 PM setting has 69% saying that's not close enough.(Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3) Nuclear weapons modernization, they say,".... endanger every person on Earth." That's me. I react.

Dear Bernadette

Global warming's logical addition from 2007 to the Doomsday Clock's setting mechanism [Dominion Post, 24/1/2015,B3] recognises the risks of nuclear weapons as worse as global winter from a nuclear war would be now from less explosions in a nuclear war, heaven forbid. It's severe superstition to imagine otherwise. All New Zealand public libraries should be required, by law, to prominently display a metre diameter version of the clock with the minute hand clearly on the 3 to 12 graduation mark. Dr. Albert Einstein deserves no less. He invented and then rejected nuclear weapons as being grossly inhuman. It's no wonder that the Red Cross are vigorously campaigning to Immediately ban them via ICAN.

The Doomsday Clock advance towards midnight, based on new nuclear risks to the planet [Dominion Post, 24/1/2015,B3] must be expertly dealt with. Nuclear weapons are best abolished like how a skilled bushman might take a sleeping tiger by the tail and escape to safety while it runs off in fright. The Red Cross Movement's ICAN Campaign is definite about it's mission to immediately abolish nuclear weapons' indiscriminate terrorist horrors of the super powers. We all should join ICAN and the Government create a new Ministry specifically to support them.

The Doomsday Clock went two minutes closer to midnight for a 11:57PM jitterbug effect on the thinking world, by famous atomic scientists [Dominion Post, 24/1/2015,B3] Does New Zealand cower in fear? We've not even a minister of disarmament. We ponder the 16,000 nuclear weapons ocean of super power strength. What can our protesting drop in that "ocean" do? It's plenty. We can expose how leaders of nuclear weapons nations are like little boys up on huge new tractors' seats at the Levin AP&I Show, pretending to steer them over a paddock. It's all a big show-off display, like baboons barring their fangs at each other in noisy warnings and a final backing off. When are these super power leaders going to grow up? None of them really wants Moscow, New York, Paris or St Petersburg vaporized in seconds. It's just a pretending game but with the "motors" turned on. Who would let a child in such a "tractor cab" with the keys in? We mega millions must unite to "take away the keys" for an immediate nuke weapons ban.

We can joke at the Doomsday Clock's 22/1/2015 shift to 11:57 PM as mad scientists' doom and gloom, fun spoiling, scare tactics [Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3] but not at the Presidents' of Russia and USA's Doomsday Planes*. They can be always airbourne. They've deputies on board to run a nuclear war should those Presidents be kidnaped or worse. We must wake up in this year of the sheep. Following blindly as if all's okay, as they sometimes do, is a doomsday recipe for the human race. The Red Cross have responded with their ICAN** campaign for the immediate abolition of nuclear weapons. We need no further proof of this emergency for humanity.

Dear Sir

Scoffers at the new 3 to midnight Doomsday Clock setting claim that it's being going since 1947 and that we're still alright.
We certainly need it like when I was near a public area's cliff at Opunake.  I ignorantly drove confidently within ten metres of the edge. The stomach churning reality of how close I was to doom upon peering down at the beach way below was stunning. We all need such realization where nuclear armed submarines and silos are for dooming cities which need such a wake up call as I got at Opunake. For instance, returning the ban the bomb sign to beside Wellington Airport and 1960's style Parliament grounds protests.

Yours sincerely

Dear Madam / Sir

Re: B3 24/1/2015 Doomsday Clock now at 11:57pm for 3 minutes to the end of the world as our home. The symbolic clock is to stimulate equal outrage over stockpiled nuclear weapons and their intention to vapourize cities. The climate change aspect is slow and minor whereas the nuclear weapons risk is for three hours of doomsday exchanges. It's a moral outrage that city populations are shockingly threatened but that this supposedly greatest invention of humankind is considered too difficult to abolish. Where there's a will there's a way. Perhaps the Dominion Post could lead globally with a weekly half page of childrens' art work with their brief hand written anti nuclear weapons letters. They could do an Emperor's  New Clothes unmasking of the nuclear industry, superpower leader, unconsulted targeted masses, rat race. It would also increase newspaper sales and framed, clipped, extra precious child messages.

Yours sincerely

Dear Madam / Sir

B3 24/1/2015 Doomsday Clock at 11:57pm. What are we individually expected to do about it? Is it out of our hands? Can individuals produce world leadership like David Lange, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Albert Einstein, Mikhail Gorbachev or Helen Clark to backtrack the clock's minute or even hour hand? New Zealanders Kate Shepherd, Ernest Rutherford, Edmund Hillary, Bill Hamilton, William Pickering, Arthur Lydiard,  Peter Blake, Peter Jackson, Jean Batten, Katherine Mansfield, Kiri Te Kanawa and Rita Angus have altered the world for the better. What's needed now is another local person who will go down in history as uniting the world Like Mahatma Gandhi did India for a new vibrant message of peace without nuclear weapons and how there can be no peace with nuclear weapons threatening all life as we know it. Obama said "Yes, we can". Yes?

Dear Madam / Sir

The Doomsday Clock's forward shift to 11:57 PM (B3 24/1/2015) sparks me to act. Just as some parents fail to immunise their children owing to various diseases' extreme wain, we must also still see dangers lurking from hidden nuclear weapons. The difference is that the risks of a third city being lost to an atomic bomb are monumentally more devastating than reemergence of old diseases. Superstition must yield to cold facts in preventative medicine, nuclear weapons included. They're the greatest medical emergency facing humanity. Yet the Atomic Scientists' symbolic clock gets few ticks from an otherwise preoccupied world. We can all draw a ban the bomb symbol with 11:57 PM added though, be it on a mirror, with lipstick, on a MacDonald's Dominion Post's mast head or inside our front window.

Yours  sincerely

Dear Madam / Sir

Reaction to serious news can be inappropriate as especially applies to the lack of public disquiet over the Doomsday Clock's 2 minute's closer shift to 11:57 PM on 22 January (B3 24/1/2015) That's never the case with learning about the dreadful Guinea worm, a very painful parasite. Action led by ex-USA President Jimmy Carter has dramatically dropped cases from 3.5 million in 1984 to a mere 126 now. Nuclear weapons, conversely, are assumed to be safe and a non issue by most. No. They can be launched in 10 minutes, can end civilization as we know it in an hour and cause terrible suffering. We've been warned by top atomic scientists that humanity's sliding on a slippery slope, especially with Ukraine's crisis easily provoking a USA / Russia show down. Where is the public alarm and Carter type action?

Dear Madam / Sir

Stop on our roads is an octagonal red sign, either two side by side red flashing lights or the red of a traffic light. There's no compromise except for emergency vehicles but not at a railway crossing. The stop signal for nuclear weapons and their abolition is the Doomsday Clock. (B3 Dominion Post 24/1/2015) It's essentially  not for us, the common people, but the super-power leaders who've nuclear weapons. Yet they seem to think that 22 January's shift from 11:55 PM to 11:57 PM has an exemption for them. What if it went to one minute to midnight? It's going that way with USA being urged to act against pro Russian rebels in Ukraine. Nuclear weapons are as illegal now as they were when used on 1945 Japan's cities. They defy every humanitarian principle. Their abolition is barbarity's reverse.

Cinderella returned to her rags and poverty at midnight and so will planet earth if we don't wake up and shake off the current deep sleep dream time over nuclear weapons risks. Atomic scientists have issued a dire warning with the Doomsday Clock's mere three minutes to midnight from 22 January's shift from 11:55 PM. ( B3  Dominion Post article of 24/1/2015) There can be only two more forward adjustments to directly await Cinderella's midnight fate for the planet. Labour has a Ministry of Disarmament and Arms control prepared if the Government. National seem to prefer the protective nuclear umbrella nonsense of the USA Military. I prefer the Atomic Scientist's view.

Dear Madam / Sir

Your 24 January B3 Doomsday Clock Article concerns our planet's No.1 terror weapon. Yet the superpowers claim that their deterrent value keeps us safe. Safe from what? Yes. Nuclear weapons themselves. Please excuse my ignorance, that many might attest to, but hasn't the world got a collective mental illness here? Surely it's cure is to put as much effort into abolishing the nuclear weapons culture cause, as is currently spent on their superpower nation's deployment. We can all help by putting a ban the bomb symbol (Official International Peace Symbol) in the top left front and flap join of our posted mail.

Games are won by setting targets except for those like snakes and ladders that use a dice. That's why the game of fully depleting our planet of nuclear weapons must involve a target to aim at like the Doomsday Clock being set at 10:20 pm for a 100 minutes to midnight safe margin of mainly climate change risk. (Refer to your B3 article of 24/1/2015) We can take charge instead of putting our beautiful world at the mercy of a dice to dodge snakes and seek ladders on 100 squares of doomsday doubt. Every classroom in New Zealand should display a Japanese poster showing the 2013 distribution of nuclear weapons. Google  RECNA "So many exist ready to be used"  *

Dear Madam / Sir

Opening The Dominion Post at B3, early on 24/1/2015, to see the Doomsday Clock set at 3 to midnight from 22 January's  2 minute closer shift, was perhaps a grim day's start for many. It isn't just all continual regimented doom and gloom though. The Swiss Army adds a light heartedness to drills*. They're a Citizens'Militia for only self defence unlike the 2003 UK/USA attack on Iraq. Everybody too should get on top of the Doomsday Clock and work to make it how we want it. Fixed at 9pm, for example, for a  3 hour safety margin, from a new world peoples' movement to abolish nuclear weapons.  In 1950, 273 million signed the Stockholm Appeal, ** including all Russian adults. We need a billion to sign for nuclear weapons' immediate halt. A world Police Force, to replace all militaries, would help keep it at 9pm or lower, to stop civil wars, via fairness in governments, from an enhanced UN Charter foundation.

Dear Madam / Sir

The Doomsday Clock's 2 minute shift to 11:57pm is no political stunt. (B3 24/1/2015)  It's from trusted nuclear scientists and the third to last possible forward shift. Action time's arrived. Seemingly intentional blocking of information on the effects of a nuclear bombed city these days is appalling. Older children are deemed still too fragile to explain the details of glass spikes blasted at multi hurricane force. The nuclear weapons nations expect the prospect of a city's total area being instantly vapourized as needing no further explanation. Clean and painless? Those on city outskirts are just considered unfortunate. They'd suffer weeks of burns agony before possibly dying of radiation poisoning. That's why a new youth pressure group must form to simply unite every nation in the facts. City populations are shockingly treated as if rubbish tip flies, under today's mutually assured destruction, nuclear threat. The Red Cross's ICAN website has more details.

In the 1980's, the tobacco industry were denying that smoking caused cancer and heart disease. Similarly, the nuclear arms industry and their lap dog politicians still claim that these evil devices keep the world safe and at peace. The truth has yet to popularly surface to refute the myths that they pedal. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation President, Dr David Krieger, puts it clearly that nuclear weapons crucially jeopardise the world. It's backed by Kennette Benedict, executive director of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists whose Doomsday Clock is 3 minutes off catastrophe. (Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3) It's time that Nuclear weapons catastrophe aversion was a NZCA compulsory subject with adequate internet resources available, such as "Nuclear-News"*.

Dear Madam / Sir

The Doomsday Clock's move to 3 to midnight has a bright side.  We've now full justification to speak out at every opportunity. (Dominion Post B3, 24/1/2015) Previous predictions on outcomes of a limited, 100 nuclear warhead skirmish have included a 10 year crop failing global winter. That's now worse with the alarming global warming trend that's part of the Clock's setting formula. As responsible global citizens, we should seek our friends and acquaintances' views on the Clock. We can also get directly involved with organisations like ICAN and NAPF. A weapon that exists, but which must never be used is too stupid for words. Their abolition now is the only way forward.

Dear Madam / Sir

His Holiness the Pope has possibly shown His true colours by praising smacking with dignity. It's never dignified and always an insult to humanity. Would He also be maybe saying that we can have hair-trigger deployed nuclear weapons with dignity too? They too are always a monstrous insult to our precious humanity. Does He therefore fully appreciate the dire warning of the Doomsday Clock's current 3 minutes to midnight setting? (Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3)  I hope that He'll gently make a 90 degree turn for some fine tuning of His otherwise praiseworthy example. Maybe, such a new right turn could usher in a rapid nuclear weapons abolition process. The total removal of the Powers of Discipline part of our Crimes Act, to cleanly delete s.59 and s.60, might follow too.

The Pope's smacking's okay if dignified comment needs His immediate withdrawal. His record on other issues is admirable such as His strongest appeal on 7 December 2014* to ban nuclear weapons that lights up the Doomsday Clock's 3 to midnight shift.(Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3) His dignified smack, slip of the tongue, will hopefully be amended, together with His ban on contraception**.

Given that the Doomsday Clock loses it's margin for safety at one minute to midnight, it's present, new, three minutes to the bewitching hour, gives an only two minute margin of safety, until planet earth practically declares human beings persona non grata. (Dominion Post B3, 24/1/2015) We'd then be unwelcome aliens, unable to be sustained in a toxic, darkened atmosphere, should we survive the heat and blast of a multitude of nuclear explosions, plus the poisonous radionuclides and added climate change factor. What then is the best format to alert a sleepwalking world at the edge of a global Niagara Falls? Analogue or digital? Perhaps we also need a daily seconds hand adjustment or 00:00:35 etc for refined tastes.

Children were once told that they came from a cabbage patch or via a stork. Victorian taboos on their true origin forced this. Likewise, It's as ridiculous for the USA or Russia to claim that hair triggered nuclear weapons keep world peace. They imperil it. The assumed deterrent of a nuclear war's mutually assured destruction (MAD) is just that. We obviously vitally need the Doomsday Clock. (Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3) People can sadly prefer warm lies to icy truth. The Atomic Scientists aren't fools. They've issued an accurate, 3 to midnight, symbolic closeness of a world unfit for human beings. Our possible nuclear weapons' caused extinction isn't cabbage plot nonsense. We simply cannot coexist with them for peace to prevail globally.

The Atomic Scientists' 22 January Doomsday Clock shift to 11:57 PM (Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3) wasn't from feather brain dreamers. It's the strongest reason to collectively call for the total abolition of nuclear weapons. The pen or feather quill's been proved mightier than the H bomb "sword" with the UN Charter*. Is it taught in schools though? Nuclear weapons are ugly.  They'd cause horrific suffering. My large strong Canada Goose white feather weighs a mere fifth of an A4 page, is beautiful and very resilient. By carrying one in public, we can show our support for the clock's reliability of a morning cold shower reality check.

If the Doomsday Clock was to move to one minute to midnight, would New Zealand declare an emergency in anticipation of possible nuclear war? (Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3) It could advance to 11:59 PM with the tensions in Ukraine being labelled the worst superpower European crisis since WW2, by older commentators. Would newspapers give it their front page and be the top TV news story? Of course, we want the Clock to go back an hour. That's if all nuclear weapons went into storage for dismantling and the atmosphere got cleaner. It's our precious genetic heritage, going back to single cell pond microbes, at stake. No more tomorrows ends our own journey. It mustn't be our precious genetic codes' future though. Their long term safe trip is for us to respect by urgent action on nuclear weapons' abolition. Why did New Zealand abolish the Ministry of Disarmament?

Is the world secretly waiting for a nuclear weapons war to see if it's as bad and close as predicted, from the symbolic Doomsday Clock's recent 120 seconds advance, towards midnight? (Dominion Post, 24/1/2015, B3)
We'd sensibly agree that, no, we're definitely not. The follow-on is that, it's therefore high time that targeted populations put in as much energy into effectively campaigning against these diabolical doomsday nukes, as hidden submarine, mobile launcher and silo crews do, in their weekly firing sequence procedure practices. For instance, staging mock such practices, as stage performances, to agonize prime ministers and presidents from furiously incensed and outraged audiences.

Funerals talk at weddings is just not on, as are farm animal welfare issues at Christmas dinners and fertilizer source for the flowers we might grow and give on Mother's Day. Tact is a mark of mature wisdom. Likewise, talk about the symbolic Doomsday Clock's 180 seconds to midnight isn't appreciated by young children before bed or probably by workers rising on a Monday morning. (Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3) When is a good time, then, for such vital earth-future clock talk? Are religious groups basing sermons on it and college morning assemblies appealing for student awareness? Might we see a few hours in Parliament devoted to it each quarter? Whatever else is news, the Doomsday Clock's fix is our main concern. Prime Minister Key's desk should boldly display it and it show with TV news presenters. It's to help avoid a distinctly possible such final-curtain day.

"It's alright", we might say, "because the Doomsday Clock is only at three to midnight and not too serious yet".
Maybe, but we only have a two minute safety margin. At one to midnight there'd be none. It would be from the last adjustment. We couldn't say that it was still "alright" then. We'd be wise to stock up on iodine tablets and the Swiss would be re-oiling the huge concrete blast door hinges of basement bunkers like our hostel had in Geneva. Overseas travelers might even be warned to update their wills. Insurance companies would certainly up their travel insurance premiums. A new global peoples' movement could, instead, ignite to uproot faulty logic of nuke bomb states. For instance, their view that targeted city masses have no legal right to say, "No. Never ever."  A tiny match can reduce a farmer's huge dry bonfire stack to fertilizing ash. Is this letter that "match"?

Dear Bernadette

An often forgotten aspect of the nuclear weapons threat is the possible plight of our non-human animal friends. How would we explain to them the recent adjustment of the Doomsday Clock to 11:57 PM? [Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3] Hypothetically, we could tell them that owing to our difficulty in resolving disputes peacefully and happily, we must threaten whole continents with extinction of most of their animal life. "What?" they might reply, "Are you telling us that as the most intelligent species on the planet you must, in effect, threaten to make the world uninhabitable for everyone, just to keep global order?"  ......."Well yes." we'd have to reply. "Then shouldn't your definition of most intelligent species be revised and altered to supposedly most ....?"

Dear Bernadette

For the Doomsday Clock to drastically back off midnight, all nations just need to sign and ratify a United Nations nuclear weapons total ban convention. [Dominion Post 24/1/2015, B3] It's already in draft form for approval. The all-nation signing will be the greatest achievement of humankind and be more powerful than the 50 megaton AN602 Tsar Bomba largest H bomb nuclear explosion in 1961. With collective human intelligence, nuclear weapons were developed and with that, plus computer "intelligence", they can be even more easily totally eradicated. We all must focus our determined desire and efforts on this goal, like how New Zealand became nuclear free. The first stage is a global lock-down of nuclear weapons. It could be done in months for a much longer dismantling schedule  afterwards.
